project statys delivery

Project Overview

We are upgrading the waste water network in the Borrowfield area of Montrose to help prevent sewer flooding and protect the local environment.

The multi-million pound project at Borrowfield Park and on Aulton Way, Newmanswalls Avenue and Newhame Road got underway in August 2026.

What We Are Doing

Following extensive survey work, we have now identified an investment proposal which would significantly reduce the risk of sewer flooding in the area, with allowance for the impact of more frequent intense rainstorms.

This project will involve the installation of a new pipeline as well as the construction of a new underground storm overflow tank.

Construction activity is required across a significant area. The underground storage tank itself will measure 25 metres wide, 9.5 metres deep and have the capacity to store up to 3.5 million litres - more than an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

New sewers will be constructed in Aulton Way, Newmanswalls Avenue and Newhame Road. Roadworks will be required during this time to allow operatives to carry this work out safely.

We hope to be in a position to begin works in August 2026 with the first few weeks involving setting up the site compound and working area within Borrowfield Park.

Why We Are Doing It

We have been working with a group of local stakeholders in recent years to investigate and address flooding problems in the Borrowfield area of Montrose.

Flooding has affected several streets in the area – both to the north and south of Newhame Road – over a period of many decades. Scottish Water is responsible for the sewer network across the country; and we have confirmed that a large part of the flooding problem has been caused by a lack of capacity in the local sewers during heavy rainstorms, which are becoming more frequent under the influence of climate change.

Customers in the area have had their streets flooded, with damage to cars and gardens – and ongoing worry during weather conditions when flooding may occur.

When completed, the project will significantly reduce the risk of sewer flooding in the area by increasing the capacity of the local waste water network and providing extra storage during heavy rainfall.

Update August 2026

Work to set up the site compound began on Monday 24 August. For the safety of the public and our operatives, temporary traffic management is in place on Newhame Road.

We thank the community for their support as we deliver this essential work.

Community engagement

We hosted an Information Event on Thursday 9 July at Borrowfield Community Centre where customers were able to find out more about this investment and ask questions of our delivery team.

Posters from the information event can be viewed below.
