Burgh Yard Monifieth Sewer Upgrades

Project Overview
Scottish Water is carrying out essential work in Monifieth to divert and upgrade part of the existing sewer network to reduce the risk of bursts and help protect the environment.
We carried out site investigation work in June 2026 to help inform the design and delivery of the project.
Construction is expected to begin towards the end of October 2026 and continue until late March 2027, with the work being delivered in three phases.
The work is being delivered by Morrison Construction.

What We Are Doing
In June 2026, we carried out a series of site investigations, including small excavations known as trial holes, at five locations across the area. These included points around the park, Riverview Drive, South Union Street, the car park east of the play park and National Cycle Route 1.
Following our investigations, we are progressing plans to divert and upgrade part of the existing sewer network in the area.
Construction work is expected to begin towards the end of October 2026 and continue until late March 2027. The project will be delivered in three phases as outlined below.
Phase 1 - Late October 2026
Work will begin at Riverview Drive in late October 2026 and progress around the play park to South Union Street (turning circle). This work is expected to last until the end of November 2026.
Traffic management will be required for up to five days while we carry out the road crossing at Riverview Drive.
Surrounding businesses will be open as usual.
The car park adjacent to the play park is expected to remain open for users. Access to the park and pathways will also be maintained throughout this phase of the work.
Phase 2 - Late November 2026
From the end of November, we will install a new sewer main adjacent to the National Cycle Route. Work will begin at the South Union Street turning circle and continue to the end of Tayview Caravan Park. This work is expected to last until the end of January 2027.
A section of the cycle route will be temporarily closed while this work is carried out. During the festive break (Friday 18 December until Tuesday 5 January 2027) excavated areas will be backfilled and the path will be reopened for public use.
Work will resume in January 2027, with the cycle route temporarily closed again while construction continues.
Surrounding businesses will be open as usual.
Phase 3 - Late January 2027
From the end of January 2027, work will move to the area near the railway footbridge at the end of Tayview Caravan Park. A new sewer will be laid adjacent to the National Cycle Route and connected into the existing network. This work is expected to last until the end of March 2027.
Most of the work will take place in the grass verge next to the cycle route, which will remain open for users.
All areas of operation will be made safe and secure. Please do not try to move any secure fencing or signage.
Why We Are Doing It
The current sewer runs beneath Tayview Caravan Park and has experienced several bursts over recent years due to the age and condition of the pipe.
While repairs have been carried out when required, diverting the sewer to a more suitable location will provide a more resilient, long-term solution, helping to reduce the risk of future bursts and protect the local environment.
Community Engagement
Ahead of the work starting, we invited local residents, businesses and stakeholders to a drop-in session where members of the project team were available to discuss the plans, answer questions and listen to feedback.
The event was held on Tuesday, 29 September 2026 at the MAC Monifieth Activity Centre, Riverview Drive, Monifieth, DD5 4NH between 2pm-6pm, and we had several productive conversations with attendees.
If you couldn't make it, all information shared at the event is available on our 'Documents Hub' section of this page. We will also provide updates to the community as the project progresses.
