Saltcoats Rising Sewer Main Upgrade

Project Overview
We are upgrading the rising sewer main between our pumping station in Saltcoats and treatment works in Stevenston.
The £5.5 million project will protect the local caravan park, golf course, bathing waters and wider environment.
It is the second phase of a multi-million-pound investment.

Beauty Spot
The rising sewer main runs past a golf course and under a caravan park. The project will protect them and the local environment from future bursts
What We Are Doing
We are relining nearly 500 metres of rising sewer main.
A temporary overland pipeline will be constructed to carry flows while the underground pipe is relined through access pits at strategic locations.
Work on the temporary pipe began in January 2026 with flows being diverted by the start of the bathing season in June.
It is anticipated the relining work and reinstatement of the area will be completed by October 2026.

Why We Are Doing It
The Saltcoats rising main has burst on multiple occasions since 2022.
The first phase of a project to reline the pipe between Saltcoats and Stevenston was completed in October 2023, but there are known defects in the pipe downstream of the newly lined section.
The project will dramatically reduce the risk of a burst under the caravan park and protect the environment, bathing water, shellfish waters and customers.

Update March 2026
Construction of the temporary pipeline that will be used to carry the high pressure waste water from the pumping station is nearing completion.
On Monday 16 March we will be undertaking trial hole surveys at the two access pits within the caravan park ahead of lining operations to expose the existing sewer pipe.
From Monday 23 March work will then begin to drive metal sheet piles into the excavations to ensure the ground is stable. This process can be noisy and may cause some ground vibrations.
An access road for construction traffic leading to the working areas and lining pits is being constructed adjacent to the temporary pipeline along the outside boundary of the caravan park.
The footpath near the rear of the caravan park will remain open and a pedestrian footbridge will be installed over the pipe to maintain access.
