Cathedral Street Glasgow Sewer Collapse

Sewer Repairs

Cathedral Street is completely closed at its junction with North Frederick Street to allow the sewer repair work to be carried out safely

Cathedral Street in Glasgow city centre is currently closed to allow our operatives to safely carry out urgent sewer repairs.

A CCTV survey has confirmed the sewer running beneath Cathedral Street has collapsed causing voids under the carriageway at its junction with North Frederick Street.

The results clearly show damage to the sewer and the soil beneath the road surface having been washed away.

The road will therefore remain closed while we carry out a repair which we estimate will take approximately four weeks to complete.

Diversion routes are in place, and we would please ask drivers to follow all signs to keep everybody safe.

We would like to thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding.

Update 13 April 2026

We have been making good progress on site, excavating to expose approximately 10 metres of egg brick sewer that will be replaced with a new, plastic pipe.

Two new manholes will then be constructed and once completed, we can dig out the sinkhole to determine the extent of the voids and develop a plan to reinstate the structural integrity of the carriageway.

Repairs on the sewer and sinkhole are now expected to take up to twelve weeks to complete after the road was closed on safety grounds on Wednesday 1 April 2026.

The damaged Victorian egg brick sewer is more than three metres deep, but unfortunately because of the heavy clay soil and presence of numerous cables and pipes, progress has been significantly slower than expected.

A substantial amount of concrete in the excavation site has also been found which must be carefully broken out and removed as there may be other power cables or other utilities encased inside.

Everything is being done complete the repairs and reopen the road as quickly as possible.

Cathedral Street remains closed between North Hanover Street and Montrose Street with a signed diversion in place. A temporary Bus Gate suspension is also in place at Cathedral Bridge and temporary parking restrictions introduced on Martha Street.

Local access to North Frederick Street, North Frederick Path, Martha Street and John Street is being maintained and traffic control operatives are on site 24 hours a day to monitor the situation.

We would like to thank everyone affected for their continued patience and understanding.
