Water Mains Upgrades in Lintrathen, Kirriemuir
Project Overview
Scottish Water is installing a new raw water main at Lintrathen to ensure customers continue to enjoy fresh, clear drinking water. Part of this upgrade involves a section of new pipe being installed on the C24 road, parallel to the Loch of Lintrathen.
The aim of this project is to enhance the resilience of water supplies by installing a large diameter pipe which will allow us to over-pump water to Melgam Burn from the River Isla, allowing us to preserve supply in the Loch of Lintrathen at times of low rainfall.
The work will begin on 1st September 2025 and will last approximately four months.

What To Expect
Due to the nature of the works and the location of the water main, the road will be closed with residential access only. Where possible, we will open section of the road at night as progress is made. Weekend work will also be carried out to ensure steady progress is being made.
We have implemented clear signage and diversion routes to help manage traffic flow. In the event of emergency, access will be made available.
Why We Are Doing This
Our climate is changing, and in the future, we can expect to see more variable and extreme weather patterns than those experienced in our historic data.
Managing our water resources is vital to ensure we adapt to climate change challenges and make future supplies resilient.
Many of our systems are very resilient and require no action, even during dry periods. In some cases, low reservoir levels indicate that we do need to take additional actions to be prepared in case dry weather continues. This could include moving water around our network or using additional supply sources.
Latest Update - February 2026
We are continuing our work at the Loch of Lintrathen, where over the past few months we have been installing a large-diameter pipe. This will allow us to over‑pump water from the River Isla to Melgam Burn, helping to preserve water levels in the loch during prolonged dry periods.
So far, we have completed the installation of the pipeline along the C24. At present, we are working to complete the final sections of pipe installation at the intake and outfall points on nearby Scottish Water land.
We will continue to work behind the scenes, installing the water main on Scottish Water land.
In mid-April 2026, we plan to close the C24 and C25 for five days each, to tidy up the road verges. Extra traffic during earlier closures caused parts of the verge to become worn down, especially in wet conditions.
These works will be weather dependant and exact dates for these closures will be communicated to you as soon as possible, but at least two weeks prior to the works commencing.

Community Engagement
We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who attended our recent drop-in event on 19th August 2025. We received lots of valuable feedback, and we are currently working closely with individuals who raised concerns to ensure that these are addressed appropriately and transparently. If you were unable to attend the drop-in event but would like to speak with a member of the team, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
To keep you informed of our progress, we will be issuing a community newsletter every 4-6 weeks. This will include updates on the work completed so far, and details of what to expect as the work progresses. Newsletters can be found on the 'documents hub' section of this page.
