The project will upgrade the local wastewater network to protect the marine environment and reduce sewer related debris entering the Firth of Forth

What We Are Doing

We will be upgrading three storm overflows – at Cramond House, Davidson’s Mains and Cramond Wastewater Pumping Station (WWPS), as well as upgrading the local sewer network.

Work on Cramond House and Davidson’s Mains will begin in July 2026 and at Cramond WWTW in October 2026.

As well as installing new overflow chambers, powered screens will prevent objects larger than 6mm from entering the water environment during periods of heavy rainfall.

Why We Are Doing It

Working closely with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) Scottish Water identified priority storm overflows for improvement or replacement.

Regular beach clean-ups in the area as well as an aesthetic study found evidence of sewer related debris at Cramond Beach, Cramon Island and surrounding the causeway.

Under the banner ‘Draining the Ran, Enhancing the Environment’ the Improving Urban Waters investment will help reduce spills and prevent sewage related debris such as wet wipes from entering the environment during periods of rainfall.
