project statys delivery

Project Overview

Hopes Reservoir is a drinking water source to around 23,000 customers in East Lothian and parts of Edinburgh. To keep it running smoothly, we need to carry out maintenance and upgrades.

We are currently working on a multi-million-pound improvement project to keep the site safe and reliable.

Initial on‑site investigations and enabling works are underway as we prepare for the main construction phase.

We anticipate a total construction period of around 15 months, however; this may be subject to change based on project progress.

The works are being carried out by Scottish Water’s delivery partner, George Leslie Ltd.

What We Are Doing

To ensure the long-term safety and performance of Hopes Reservoir, we are assessing and, if needed, upgrading key elements of the spillway, drawdown systems, and embankment.

This work is required to make sure the reservoir can safely manage extreme flood events, maintain structural integrity, and continue operating safely for years to come.

The planned improvements ensure Scottish Water complies with the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act 2011. The work addresses specific safety measures known as Measures in the Interest of Safety (MIOS).

Visiting Hopes Reservoir During Construction

For safety reasons associated with ongoing construction work, access to the walkway route around Hopes Reservoir is currently restricted.

The main hiking route into the Lammermuir Hills remains open and accessible to the public, and alternative access routes are signposted on site.

We recognise Hopes Reservoir is an important outdoor space and appreciate visitors’ patience while this essential work is carried out. These restrictions are in place to ensure the safety of both the public and our construction teams.

Please follow all signage on site and check this page for updates as the works progress.

A gravel path curves through a grassy landscape with gently rolling hills in the background. A sign by the side of the path reads, "No access to reservoir due to ongoing works."

Signage is in place to advise walkway around reservoir is restricted

Restrictions will remain in place for the duration of the work
