Burdiehouse Edinburgh Sewer Upgrade

Burdiehouse Burn

Over a kilometre of old pipe will be abandoned with wastewater flows diverted to alleviate flooding and improve the water quality of the burn

What We Are Doing

We are abandoning approximately 1100m of old sewer pipe and diverting wastewater flows into another existing sewer. The existing manhole chamber will also be repaired.

Why We Are Doing It

The pipe is in poor condition and there is a history of flooding impacting the park and Burdiehouse Burn.

Update April 2026

Site set up started on Monday 13 April 2026 to begin work within the park area just off Burdiehouse Drive.

We will initially be setting out a footpath closure and diversion around the site by placing out advanced signage to advise there will be no through access.

Locals and dog walkers will be allowed to use the footpaths in the meantime until our secure site area has been laid out.

We will work with the community to minimise any disruption for the duration of the work which we expect to last around four weeks.

Once the old pipe has been abandoned and wastewater flows diverted it will prevent any further deterioration of the network and flooding to the local area and burn.

The work will also facilitate delivery of the Burdiehouse Crescent phase of the ‘Restore the Burn’ project by Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.
