Climate Ready Craigleith

Project Overview
Climate Ready Craigleith is a partnership programme helping the area adapt to the impacts of climate change, by working with nature to help manage changing rainfall patterns and reduce flood risk.
Working with partners through the Edinburgh & Lothians Strategic Drainage Partnership, Scottish Water and the City of Edinburgh Council are delivering projects that help manage rainwater in more sustainable ways.
These nature-based solutions slow the flow of water, reduce pressure on the drainage network and create wider benefits for local communities, including improved green spaces and biodiversity.
Nature-based solutions
Free water butts and stormwater planters were installed at 27 properties in Craigleith to help manage surface water in the area.
Projects delivered so far
Craigleith Water Butts and Stormwater Planters
Free water butts and stormwater planters were installed at 27 properties across Craigleith, helping to capture rainwater before it enters the sewer network. Together, the measures remove around 1,363m² of roof area from direct drainage to the sewers, helping to reduce flood risk while also providing benefits for residents and wildlife.
The Orchard Park project uses swales and basin features to capture and manage surface water from nearby roads and hard surfaces before it reaches the sewer network. Alongside reducing flood risk, the project has created new walking routes, improved accessibility and enhanced biodiversity within the park.
Looking Ahead
Climate Ready Craigleith will continue to explore innovative approaches to managing rainwater and building resilience to climate change. Future projects will be added here as they are developed and delivered.
