Bellshill

Project Overview
We are upgrading the wastewater network in Bellshill to improve the quality of the water environment and to reduce sewer-related debris entering the South Calder Water.
This investment forms part of our wider £500 million Improving Urban Waters programme, which is focused on enhancing water quality in communities across Scotland.
The start date is yet to be confirmed and will be shared when more information becomes available.
The project will be delivered by Caledonia Water Alliance on behalf of Scottish Water.

What We Are Doing
The project will be carried out within Bellshill Golf Course and Strathclyde Park and will include the installation of a new pipe bridge, a new storm overflow chamber with screening equipment, and upgrades to the surrounding sewer network.
Why We Are Doing It
Working closely with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) Scottish Water identified priority storm overflows for improvement or replacement.
Under the banner ‘Draining the Rain, Enhancing the Environment’ the Improving Urban Waters investment will help reduce spills and prevent sewage-related debris such as wet wipes from entering the environment during periods of rainfall.
Latest Update - October 2026
The project was due to begin in October 2026. However, following surveys of the site, bat roosts have been identified within the project area. As bats and their habitats are protected by law, work has been postponed while we work with the relevant parties to determine the next steps.
We'll provide a further update as soon as a revised start date has been confirmed.
