Project Overview

We are delivering a package of investment to improve and protect the water environment in Bo’ness.

Part of our £500million Improving Urban Waters programme, we are delivering a significant upgrade of the wastewater network in the town. This investment will help the area better manage heavy rainfall, reduce the risk of sewer-related flooding and help prevent wet wipes and other sewer related debris from entering the Firth of Forth.

Improving Urban Waters Launch

Protecting the environment

The investment is designed to protect the community from flooding and improve the water environment

What We Are Doing

The project involves constructing replacement storm overflows at Grangepans, Snab Lane and Grangemouth Road, each of which will be fitted with new powered screens to improve performance and resilience.

We will also be realigning sections of the sewer network at all three locations. The full programme of work is expected to be completed by summer 2027.

Grangepans: Work to set up a site compound began on Monday 10 August 2026 and the programme of work at Grangepans is expected to be completed within approximately eight months.

Snab Lane: Work to construct a replacement SO at Snab Lane began on Monday 28 September 2026. In order to ensure the safety of the public and our operatives, Snab Brae is closed. A fully signposted diversion route is in place.

We appreciate that the road closure may cause disruption and would like to thank the community for their support while we carry this essential work out as safely as possible.

Why We Are Doing It

Working closely with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) Scottish Water identified priority storm overflows for improvement or replacement.

Under the banner ‘Draining the Rain, Enhancing the Environment’ the investment will help prevent sewage related debris such as wet wipes from entering the environment during periods of rainfall.

Update - September 2026

We hosted an online briefing with stakeholders on Thursday 10 September to discuss the package of investment in more detail.
