Milngavie Reservoirs

The Craigmaddie and Mugdock reservoirs in Milngavie are two reservoirs which store drinking water supplying 700,000 customers in Greater Glasgow. As well as being a vital source of water, the site is also an important local beauty spot and recreational facility The site which has historical, recreational and environmental significance attracts around 160,000 visitors per year. A ranger service, Scottish Water Top Up Tap and a defibrillator are all in at the site.

Based on the operational aspects of the reservoir and the visitor attraction elements, various investment projects are regularly being carried out across the site. With any of these projects, Scottish Water will ensure to effectively communicate with the community aiming to keep any disruption for visitors and local residents to a minimum.

Project Overview - Craigmaddie Reservoir

What we are doing

We are undertaking works to improve the land drainage on Craigmaddie Reservoir embankment. Works will begin on 7th April  and will last approximately 3 months.
This work is being carried out to maintain the existing land drainage located within the embankment of Craigmaddie reservoir and to install additional new drainage systems.

Next Steps

To enable this work to be carried out it will be necessary to close the eastern and southern footpaths around Craigmaddie reservoir on weekdays. This closure will be in place from adjacent the access gates on Strathblane Road around to the Craigmaddie Straining Well. The pedestrian footpath from the toilet block will also be closed, from the first stile (eastbound) and along the base of Craigmaddie reservoir. Pedestrian access will be maintained from Roselea Drive, however access over the wall via the stile (north of Roselea Drive) will be closed and a diversion will be in place along the grass footpath to the gate adjacent to the toilet block.

The stile and a short section of the wall directly north of the of the Roselea Drive access point may need be temporarily removed to enable access to Craigmaddie reservoir embankment working area. Discussions regarding this are currently ongoing with the relevant planning authorities.

A temporary pedestrian scaffold staircase will also be installed at this location, allowing the site team to safely travel between the top and bottom of the embankment within the working area that is inaccessible to the public.

A site compound will be located next to Roselea Drive, in the same area that was used during the last Craigmaddie Reservoir Valve Tower and Footpath projects. Any equipment and materials transported onto the site through both the Roselea Drive and Strathblane Road access points will be accompanied by a banksman for guidance and safety.

We will keep this page up to date as the project progresses.
