Project Overview

A new Waste Water Pumping Station is being constructed at Almondbank, Perth. A new rising main pipeline has already been constructed as part of this project, going across farmland to connect the Pumping Station with the new sewer network which will eventually flow through the new 'Super Sewer' that has recently been installed at Tay Street and Shore Road.

These upgrades are part of Scottish Water's investment in Perth to support the city's continued growth. These new waste water assets will also help to reduce the known risk of sewer flooding in the area.

What we are doing

We are installing 5.2km of new gravity trunk sewer pipeline in Almondbank and the Inveralmond area of Perth.

This will mainly be installed using open-cut excavation methods, however trenchless techniques will be used in high-traffic areas including underneath the A9 and the Inveralmond roundabout.

We are also constructing a new Pumping Station to replace the existing Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) in Almondbank. This is being made possible by the increased capacity that will soon be available at Perth WWTW thanks to the upgrades currently being delivered there. The new Pumping Station will be located within the current grounds of the Almondbank WWTW.

The new sewer pipeline being laid will connect into the new Pumping Station in Almondbank and also directly into the recently upgraded ‘Super Sewer’ on Tay Street.

Why we are doing it

Perth is a growing and evolving city, with new homes and businesses being developed each year. To support this growth, the city’s waste water network needs to have enough capacity to serve both current and future customers.

We are also experiencing more frequent intense rainfall as our climate changes.

Investing now means we can strengthen the performance and resilience of Perth’s waste water network so it can better cope with these conditions and continue to protect properties and the environment.

By increasing capacity, creating new connections to recently upgraded infrastructure, and modernising key assets, we are helping to reduce the risk of sewer flooding and supporting a thriving, sustainable future for the city.

Latest Update - December 25

Work is progressing well on site, with the majority of the new 5.2km of sewer pipeline already laid.

Our team have now successfully installed the penstock into the grass verge beside the A9 at the Inveralmond roundabout, which will allow the flow in the sewer network to be controlled.

The next step for our team on site is to connect the new sewer pipeline into the existing sewer network, including the 'Super Sewer' in Tay Street and Shore Road - a large diameter sewer pipeline which was recently installed in the summer to increase the capacity of the network.

We are also currently working on the construction of the new Pumping Station in Almondbank, which will include the decommissioning of the current Almondbank Waste Water Treatment Works.
