Planned works on Main Street, Kirknewton
Planned works in Kirknewton
We would like to inform customers in Kirknewton of upcoming work scheduled for Thursday 23rd April.
We know that recent work by Scottish Water in Kirknewton caused disruption over the Easter weekend, and we’re sorry again for the inconvenience this caused to the local community.
We’ll be returning to Main Street on Thursday 23rd April to complete the outstanding burst water main repair. This work has been replanned to minimise disruption and will be carried out using four‑way temporary traffic lights, rather than a full road closure, allowing traffic to continue flowing safely while maintaining access for residents, businesses and bus services.
Four‑way temporary traffic lights will be in place alongside a temporary traffic regulation order on Hillhouse Terrace, from number 9 to number 16 and Hillhouse Farm Cottages, for the duration of the work. Temporary parking restrictions will be in place, and we ask that all signage is followed and vehicles are not parked in these areas to allow the works to proceed safely.
To avoid the need for further roadworks at a later date, we’ll also take the opportunity to replace a noisy cover at the same time, using the same traffic management setup.
Customers' water supply is expected to remain unaffected, however a temporary interruption to a small number of nearby properties may be used as a contingency while the repair is completed.
We aim to have both repairs completed and fully reinstated on Thursday 23rd April, with traffic management removed on Friday 24th April, subject to no complications.
Thank you to residents and road users for their patience while we carry out this essential work.

Discoloured Water FAQs
If the water from your cold kitchen tap (or any other mains fed tap) suddenly becomes discoloured, this could be because some maintenance or repair work is being carried out on our network in your area. If we have not informed you of any work being carried out, please contact us for more details. If we are not working in your area, we will investigate the cause of discolouration for you and let you know. For more information please see our factsheet: Colour, taste and odour explained.
In most cases discoloured water is not harmful and can be cleared by running the first incoming cold water tap (usually in the kitchen) at a trickle until it clears. Very occasionally customers have noticed "tiny particles" or "bits" in their tap water. This can be caused by planned or unplanned work to the water supply network which causes natural sediment in the pipes to shift (quite often this is a dark red, brown colour).
Small dark grey or black particles can occasionally be caused if your pipework is made from lead. This is most likely if your house was built before 1970. For more information see our Lead and Your Water pages.
