Non-Household Smart Metering FAQs
Non-household Smart Water Meters
Smart water meters are being introduced to business premises across Scotland as part of our commitment to replace and upgrade water meters across the network.
These meters automatically capture and transmit consumption data without the need for manual meter readings and will help improve visibility of your water use, support more accurate billing and contribute to a more sustainable water future for Scotland.
Nothing. Installations follow Scottish Water's planned rollout, so you don't need to request one or book anything. We'll aim to contact you in advance to arrange a suitable time to install your smart meter.
No. There's no charge for the installation of your smart meter.
Yes. Someone from your business needs to be on site to give our metering technician access to the meter so the installation can be completed.
There may be a short, temporary interruption to your supply while the meter is fitted. Our technician will keep any disruption to a minimum and let you know how long you'll be without water.
No - Scottish Water operates a rolling programme to replace water meters and keep them accurate and reliable. As part of this rolling programme, older mechanical meters are being upgraded to smart water meters. This will help to improve visibility of your water use, support more accurate billing and contribute to a more sustainable water future for Scotland.
Your new smart meter starts recording consumption automatically, and your water services carry on as normal. There's nothing further you need to do.
We're working with Licensed Providers to make smart meter data available to customers in future. We'll share more information as these services become available.
Please contact your Licensed Provider (the company that bills you for water) with any questions about your smart water meter.
