Sewer Upsize
Capacity of the local sewer network has been increased to alleviate flooding during heavy rain
Scottish Water has completed the second and final phase of a £2.3million project to tackle sewer flooding on an East Ayrshire street.
Properties along David Dale Avenue in Stewarton had been prone to internal and external flooding during periods of heavy rain for many years.
A new upgraded section of pipe was installed to increase the capacity of the local network in 2023 to make it less prone to overflowing.
Now, the second phase of the project, which saw almost 150 metres of giant two-metre-wide pipe installed at up to eight metres deep, has been completed.
Great Lengths - and Depths
Nearly 150 metres of new sewer pipe measuring almost two metres in diameter has been installed at depth of up to 8.5 metres
Scottish Water Senior Project Manager Megan Constantine said: “This was a challenging project to deliver given the size of the pipe and the route it had to follow.
“We had to go from a residential garden, under a school playing field and then across a major roundabout on the A735 to tie in with the existing sewer network.
“We used directional drilling to avoid large scale excavations, tree removal and traffic management on the road and we are grateful to everyone for their patience, cooperation and understanding.”
The project included installing new manholes

Temporary over-pumping had been in place to protect properties while the work was carried out.
A specialist landscaping contractor will be on site over the coming months to install turf, and a new fence and plants are being gifted to Lainshaw Primary School.
Megan Constantine added: “Sewer flooding causes disruption and distress whenever it happens and that is why we are investing many millions of pounds across the country to address the challenges of climate change, ageing infrastructure and increasing demand.
“We are delighted to have completed an important project that will bring peace of mind to the community for many years to come.”
