Water, Winning and Wellbeing 💧🥉
What links a Commonwealth Games medal, a morning coffee, an ice bath and a refillable bottle? Water.
In the latest episode of Drip Feed, host Clare Smith explores the part water plays in performance, recovery, concentration and everyday wellbeing. She is joined by Commonwealth Games bronze medallist gymnast Cameron Lynn and Dr Nidia Rodriguez-Sanchez, Senior Lecturer in Physiology and Nutrition at the University of Stirling.
Together, they move beyond the idea that hydration is only for elite athletes. The conversation shows how water supports the body and brain whether you are training, working, studying, travelling or simply getting through a busy day.

Made for big moments 🥉
Cameron takes us behind the scenes of his Commonwealth Games experience, from the disappointment of a fourth-place team finish to the pressure and excitement of winning bronze on the pommel horse.
He also explains how water features throughout his day: with breakfast, during high-intensity training and as part of recovery. In gymnastics, water is not only something athletes drink. It can also play a practical part in preparing grip for apparatus, while baths and ice baths form part of Cameron’s recovery routine.
The science of staying sharp 🧠
Nidia explains that water underpins essential processes throughout the body, including how the brain communicates with muscles, digestion and the transport of nutrients. Needs vary from person to person and can change with activity, conditions and body composition, so one figure does not fit everyone.
The episode also looks at focus and decision-making. Nidia discusses why sipping water regularly matters for concentration and reaction time, not just in sport but during activities such as studying, driving or working at a desk.

Electrolytes, cramps and a surprising pickle-juice tip 🥒
Cameron puts his own questions to Nidia, including whether electrolytes are more useful than caffeine. Her answer is that they do different jobs: caffeine is associated with alertness, while electrolytes are involved in processes including muscle contraction and fluid balance.
For most people doing shorter, everyday activity, electrolytes can come from a varied diet. The conversation also tackles cramps and why there may be more than one contributing factor. Then comes one of the episode’s most unexpected moments: Nidia’s experience of using pickle juice during a marathon.
Simple ways to keep topped up 🚰
The practical message is straightforward: do not leave drinking until the last minute. Keep water within reach and take regular sips through the day, with individual needs increasing during harder exercise or warmer conditions.
The guests also discuss a simple visual hydration check. For generally healthy people whose medicines or supplements do not change urine colour, pale yellow can indicate good hydration, while a darker colour may mean it is time to drink more. If you have health concerns or need personalised guidance, seek advice from a qualified health professional.
When you are out and about, a reusable bottle makes it easier to keep topped up. Scottish Water’s public Top Up Taps provide free tap water at locations across Scotland, helping people refill on the go and reduce reliance on single-use bottles.

If you only remember five things from the conversation:
- Water supports both physical performance and everyday concentration.
- Hydration needs are individual and can change with exercise, temperature and conditions.
- Regular sips through the day can be easier than waiting until you feel thirsty.
- Electrolytes and caffeine have different roles; most everyday activity does not automatically require an electrolyte drink.
- A refillable bottle and Scotland’s Top Up Taps make it easier to top up while you are out and about.
We are all fuelled by water 💙
Water supports much more than winning medals. It helps us focus, recover and feel ready for what comes next. Cameron brings the energy and experience of elite sport, while Nidia turns the science into clear, useful learning for everyone.
